Company > History

The company was founded in the city of Campinas, state of São Paulo on May 10, 1954, with the name Indústrias Químicas Rodolfo Rohr S.A. With its Liovac® brand, Miracema was a pioneer in the manufacture of additives for industrial lubricating oils, and became the exclusive supplier to international oil companies.

The change of name to Companhia Miracema Industrial was in homage to the city of Miracema in the northern part of state of Goiás - today the state of Tocantins - where its founder developed and implemented a project for mechanizing the breaking of Babassu coconuts.

With the acquisition of Nuodex Brasil S.A. in the beginning of the 1970s, there began a period of development and production of drying agents for paints of the Liosec® brand. During this time a Liquid Effluent Treatment Station (ETEL) was put in place.

In 1972, the company came to be called Miracema-Nuodex, strengthening its positioning in the domestic and international markets.

In 1974, it expanded its market share with distribution and exporting of products to Latin America and 26 other countries.

In mid-1978, it completed its Unit I for the distillation of fatty acids, and launched the products of the Liacid® brand. It also completed its Unit I for hydrogenation, achieving an annual production of 6,000 tons.

In 1980, Miracema-Nuodex acquired a 72,000 m² area beside its factory that made it possible to expand the manufacturing plant and the diversification of its products.

In 1981, it became the leading company in Brazil for the production of biocides when it signed a licensing and technology transfer agreement with Bode Chemie Hamburg. From that point it began to make bactericides and fungicides for a variety of applications through the consolidated brands: Coryna®, Liocide®, Liodoxin® and Liocynona®.

Three years later, in 1984, the company completed its Unit II for distillation of fatty acids and Unit II for hydrogenation.

Between 1991 and 1992, a number of products were launched based on bismuth, a green, non-toxic metal that provided an innovative replacement for undesirable lead compounds. Bismuth had never been used before in formulations for lubricants and greases.

Miracema-Nuodex was the first chemical company in Brazil to receive ISO 9002, certification, on December 4, 1992.

In 1993, the company commenced operations at its Microbiology Laboratory, as one of the priorities in the company&cute;s planning.

Still during the 1990s, Miracema-Nuodex began to supply cobalt-based catalysts to the world&cute;s main manufacturers of radial tires and rubber, under the Liocat® brand. In addition to these products, it began to manufacture catalysts for the production of algaecide resins, polyurethanes, polyester and PU foams. In 1998, Goodyear rated the company as class "A" supplier.

Starting in 1998, the company began to supply Petrobras with additives to be used as ingredients in the fluids for drilling oil wells, strengthening its solid and fruitful relationship dating back to the 1980&cute;s with the provision of additives for lubricants.

In 1999, an environmental management system (SGA) was implemented for the purpose of minimizing environmental impacts caused throughout the chain of production, whether they involved providing suitable treatment for waste products and effluents, or optimizing the use of natural resources.

In 2001 the Application Laboratory for Paints was built for the purpose of supporting the department of Research and Development, as well as our clients. It is a complete laboratory, with state of the art equipment and the ability to evaluate various types of products such as mixtures of drying agents, dispersants, anti-foaming agents, inhibitors to prevent loss of drying properties and anti-peeling. With this structure, an ample line of additives was developed, which are now internationally recognized under the brands Lioplex®, Liosperse®, Liofoam®, Liodry® and Scinex®.

In 2002, Miracema-Nuodex adopted a modern visual identity that better represents the domain of its activities. In this same year the Gaseous Effluent Treatment Station (ETEG) was inaugurated.

In 2003, the physical and highly qualified human resources structure of the Laboratory of Microbiology was expanded. New equipment was installed to meet the needs of clients and the market, and to validate the efficiency of the biocides in paint-related products.

During this same year, the company invested in improving and expanding its Lubricants Application Laboratory. It increased its staff of specialized technicians in this segment and acquired new equipment, which resulted in the development of additives through new technologies and the expansion of the line of internationally recognized products by Liovac®.

Also in 2003, intense investments in technology and training made possible the upgrading of its Certification to ISO 9001 - version 2000.

2004 marked the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the company and the release of the book that tells the story of Miracema-Nuodex.

Also in 2004, the operations of the Pilot Plant were started simulating the activities of 46 factory turbines, the linchpin between the laboratory and production.

A new line of biocides was developed for paper as well as emulsifiers for mineral oils.

In 2005, Miracema-Nuodex placed on the market yet another innovative product: a catalyst for totally renewable Biodiesel - Liovac 3238 - an Ethylic Ester of Soy Oil. Also during this period, Miracema-Nuodex inaugurated phase II of ETEL - Liquid Effluent Treatment Station.

In the beginning of 2006 the Application Laboratory of Fluids for Drilling Oil Wells commenced operations, allowing for greater improvement of additives for this application and also new developments under the brands Liomul®, Liolub®, Liomid®, Liomov® and Liovac®. For the third consecutive year, the company maintained its position among the 50 largest companies in the field of Chemicals and Petrochemicals in Brazil.

Through a major partnership with Brazil&cute;s principal mining and fertilizer companies, in the second half of 2007 Miracema-Nuodex inaugurated its Application Laboratory for Minerals and Fertilizers, focusing on the development of anti-dust and anti-caking products under the brands Liodust® and Liofert®.

In 2007, Liacid® 1721 was introduced - a fatty acid of castor oil, dehydrated and purified through the "Thin-Film Evaporator", a device in which products are subjected to molecular distillation. The technology contained in this equipment provides distillation in a vacuum of a fine layer of material that is soft and continuous, without undergoing prolonged thermal exposure, which ensures a product with a light color, with excellent drying characteristics, that is mainly used for the manufacture of algaecide resins.

In 2008, Liofert® 405 was introduced to serve the mining industry. It is an anti-dust agent used in the unloading of dry ore.

In mid-2010, Miracema began studies for implementing an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to enable the company to take a major step forward in the processing of its data, seeking a highly reliable management tool.
After analyzing various ERPs, the company chose SAP as most suitable for its needs and also because it was the ERP system already adopted by the main players in the chemical industry.
After five months of intense efforts to deploy the project, SAP finally went live on January 3, 2011, with full success.

In 2011, we initiated the approval process for our AFFF - Aqueous Film Forming Foam line in compliance with ABNT Standard 15511:2008, which sets stringent performance criteria for fire fighting foam, and in early 2012 the certificate of conformity of our products was received.

2014: Today, three years after implementation of the SAP system, now with all its operational functions working satisfactorily and entering a second phase, Miracema is preparing the system&cute;s base for installation of Business Intelligence (BI). This will offer the organization highly qualified management tools that will equip it to face both current challenges and those that certainly will emerge in the future.

Recognition. Over the past 65 years there have been a great many awards and certificates conferred upon Miracema-Nuodex. It has won the Paint & Pintura Award on a number of occasions as the best supplier of additives for paints in Brazil, in the biocides category.
