V.I. Improver

These are chemical compounds that reduce the viscosity variation based on temperature. The VII’s are linear polymers that form “protective” structures in the lubricant and as the temperature rises, the solubility in oil increases, “swelling up” these structures, which impede the fluid flow. In this way they raise the oil viscosity at higher temperatures.
