Polyurethanes

The PU industry uses organometallic catalysts that have a strong effect on the polymerization reaction. Tin octoate is the most used one in flexible foams. Microcellular elastomers, RIM systems (Reaction Injection Molding) and extruded elastomers are catalyzed by dibutyl-tin dilaurate (DBTL).

The catalyst action in the reaction between alcohols and isocyanates not only increases the reaction speed, but also influences the selectiveness of the formed product.

The catalytic activity of a given catalyst varies based on the chemical structure, both of the isocyanate as well as the hydrogen donor compound.
